While in university, I took on small projects to help pay for school, in between summer breaks and part time jobs. After University, I did more work for various clients via UpWork, and by approaching local businesses that need websites. A lot of small businesses are stuck in 2004 still, so there is a market for individuals designers and developers to roll up their sleeves and design the odd business website and/or brand.

While I enjoy freelancing, it's not very financially rewarding from a budgeting aspect - you'll find you're looking for clients as much as you are working, which implies you're making half of what you earn looking for the next client.
